Expert Arborist Reports Across Central Wollongong
Ward 2 contains the Wollongong urban core together with established suburbs extending toward the Illawarra Escarpment.
Representative areas include Wollongong, most of North Wollongong, Keiraville, Gwynneville, Figtree, Mount Kembla and adjoining central suburbs. Fairy Meadow, Balgownie and North Wollongong sit on the Ward 1/Ward 2 boundary. The ward contains everything from apartment and mixed-use development in Wollongong to established residential properties on sloping sites closer to Mount Keira and Mount Kembla.
Which Arborist Report Do You Need?
City-Centre Development, Established Housing & Escarpment Sites
Central Wollongong contains Wollongong's strongest concentration of apartment, commercial and mixed-use development. Basements, boundary excavation, access and underground services can create significant conflicts with trees on development sites and adjoining properties.
North Wollongong, which is split with Ward 1, combines higher-density redevelopment with established residential areas. Figtree and the escarpment-side suburbs contain more sloping residential land with mature vegetation. Mount Kembla and surrounding areas introduce a stronger relationship with the escarpment and native vegetation.

Wollongong Council Tree Guidelines in Ward 2
Council's Tree Management Rules apply throughout Ward 2. Development Applications involving significant vegetation may require arboricultural documentation, and trees proposed for removal because of development should be considered through the DA.
Council permission is generally required for non-exempt trees more than 5 metres high or with a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more measured at ground level.
Public trees should not be pruned or removed privately.
Replacement planting: every approved private-tree removal carries a replacement-tree condition. Wollongong is among Council's identified low-canopy suburbs. Council still requires one replacement tree for each approved removal, but eligible residents in low-canopy suburbs may collect two replacement trees through Council's Greenplan Plant Sales. Check current thresholds and exemptions on the Wollongong Council tree requirements page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Root systems and Tree Protection Zones can extend well into a development site. On constrained Wollongong apartment sites, a neighbour's tree can limit basement lines and building footprints, so the Arboricultural Impact Assessment should show how it will be protected.
Yes. Deep basement excavation can significantly affect roots of trees on the site and on adjoining land. Early assessment lets the excavation line or construction method respond before plans are fixed.
They can be. Figtree has a stronger slope and escarpment influence and generally lower-density residential development.
Yes. Development-related removal should normally be included within the DA. For standalone private-tree removal, pruning or Tree Permit questions unrelated to development, Wollongong Tree Permit Services can check the Council pathway first.
