Expert Arborist Reports Across Wollongong City Council

Covering Wollongong, Corrimal, Bulli, Figtree, Dapto and every Wollongong LGA suburb.

Wollongong City Council spans the CBD and northern coastal suburbs, escarpment-fringed western neighbourhoods, southern industrial and lakeside areas, and the growing communities around Dapto.

Mature street trees, steep escarpment sites and significant native vegetation mean Arborist Reports are commonly required for Development Applications, tree removal and construction near retained trees.

Wollongong Tree Preservation Rules

Wollongong City Council may require a Tree Permit, Development Application (DA) or Arborist Report where proposed tree work or development affects protected trees.

  • A Tree Permit is generally required for trees more than 5 metres high, with a trunk diameter of 300 mm or more at ground level, requiring pruning of branches over 100 mm in diameter, involving large root pruning, or where the tree is dead or dying.
  • Development affecting retained trees is generally assessed through the Development Application or Complying Development process and commonly requires an Arboricultural Impact Assessment, TPZ and SRZ assessment, together with a Tree Protection Plan prepared in accordance with AS 4970 where applicable.
  • Some exempt tree species, palms and tree removals previously approved through Development Consent may not require a Tree Permit.
  • Properties zoned RU1, RU2 or RU4 may require approval from Local Land Services rather than Wollongong City Council.
  • Unauthorised tree pruning or removal may result in enforcement action and financial penalties.
  • We can determine whether your project requires a Tree Permit, Development Application or Arborist Report and prepare Council-ready documentation.

Understanding these requirements early helps determine what your project needs before work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my tree exempt from Council approval?

A permit is generally not required for trees on Council's exempt species list, or where removal has already been authorised under an approved Development Consent. We can confirm exemption status before you proceed.

Do I need Council approval to remove a tree?

In most cases, yes. A Tree Permit is generally required where a tree is more than 5 metres high, has a trunk diameter of 300 mm or more measured at ground level, requires pruning of branches more than 100 mm in diameter, involves large root pruning, or is dead or dying.

Do different rules apply on rural land?

Yes. Properties zoned RU1, RU2 or RU4 may require approval from Local Land Services rather than Wollongong City Council. We can confirm which pathway applies to your property.

How soon can you attend for an urgent assessment?

Fast-track reporting is available for urgent and hazardous tree assessments, subject to availability.

Do you prepare reports for builders, architects and developers?

Yes. We prepare DA Arborist Reports at design stage, Tree Protection Plans post-approval, and Project Arborist inspections through construction for residential and commercial projects across Wollongong.

Do I need an Arborist Report for a CDC?

Many Complying Development Certificate (CDC) projects affecting trees still require an arboricultural assessment demonstrating compliance with AS 4970 and the relevant planning controls.
