What To Do If a Tree Is Dangerous
If a tree has fallen or looks unstable:
- Keep people and pets away from the tree and anything it could hit.
- If there is an immediate threat to life, or the tree is on powerlines, call 000. Call the SES on 132 500 for storm damage help.
- Do not climb or cut the tree yourself.
- If it is safe, take photos of the tree, the damage and any cracks, lifting roots or hanging branches.
- Call us on 0494 077 630.
Can a Dangerous Tree Be Removed Without Council Approval?
Most Sydney councils allow work on a tree that presents an imminent risk to life or property without waiting for a standard permit. The exact wording and evidence required differ between councils, and some ask for an AQF Level 5 arborist's assessment to support the work.
Where emergency work goes ahead, keep photos and any arborist report. Council may ask you to show why the work was necessary. Removal that is not genuinely urgent still needs the usual approval.

Preventing the Next Emergency
Many tree failures show warning signs beforehand, such as cracks, decay, dieback, lifting roots or a new lean. A Tree Risk Assessment can identify these early, and Resistograph testing can check for internal decay. Where risk can be reduced, pruning may allow the tree to be kept.
Our arborists inspect your trees and the surrounding site to identify hazards before they escalate, and document the findings in an AQF Level 5 Health and Safety report where council approval is needed. Regular, correct pruning reduces the risk from weakened trees, and trees that are badly decayed should only be removed by an experienced team, with council approval where required.
