Tree Root Investigation & Mapping Sydney
Non-Destructive Root Investigation and AirSpade Excavation
A Tree Root Investigation determines the actual location, depth, size and condition of significant tree roots before excavation, construction or engineering works begin.
- AQF Level 5, QTRA and TRAQ qualified Consulting Arborists
- 32+ years' arboricultural experience
- In-house non-destructive AirSpade excavation
- Survey-integrated root mapping
- Fast-track service available
Need to Know Where Tree Roots Actually Are?
Rather than relying on assumptions about where roots are likely to be, a root investigation provides site-specific, verified information, giving architects, engineers, builders and councils the certainty they need to make informed decisions while protecting retained trees.
Arbor Express undertakes Tree Root Investigations throughout Sydney using non-destructive excavation techniques, with reports prepared by AQF Level 5, QTRA and TRAQ qualified Consulting Arborists.

When Do You Need a Tree Root Investigation?
Root investigations are most commonly requested where excavation is proposed within a Tree Protection Zone and the actual root location needs to be verified before construction proceeds, rather than estimated from the surface.
- Excavation inside a Tree Protection Zone (TPZ)
- Basement construction, swimming pools and extensions
- Driveways, service trenches and stormwater installation
- Retaining walls and utility installation
- Council consent conditions requiring verified root data
What Does the Investigation Include?
Each investigation is tailored to the proposed works and covers the items listed.
- Site inspection and tree assessment
- Verification of Tree Protection Zones
- Root exposure, identification and condition assessment
- Root diameter, depth and distribution recording
- Photographic documentation and mapping
- Practical, construction-specific recommendations
AirSpade Root Investigation
AirSpade excavation is our preferred technique for investigating roots close to construction works, and it's what sets a genuine root investigation apart from a visual estimate.
Using compressed air rather than mechanical digging, an AirSpade carefully removes soil from around roots while minimising the risk of mechanical damage, exposing the root system so it can be measured and recorded while it remains structurally intact. This makes it suitable for use within Tree Protection Zones, where conventional excavation carries a higher risk of damaging roots that need to be protected.
AirSpade investigation lets us expose structural roots while minimising disturbance, accurately record diameter, depth and direction, and provide verified, defensible findings rather than estimates.
Root Mapping and Survey Integration
For development and construction projects, a root investigation is most valuable when the findings can be used directly by your design and engineering team, not just read in a written report. Where required, we map surveyed root locations and integrate them with your project's spatial data, working alongside registered surveyors, architects and civil engineers. Outputs can include the items listed.
This is what distinguishes a genuine root investigation from a narrative report describing roots in general terms: your engineer or architect can see exactly where roots are, relative to your design, and plan around them.
- CAD-compatible root mapping
- GIS-compatible root mapping
- Surveyed root coordinates
- Integration with existing construction drawings
Tree Root Investigation vs DA Tree Impact Assessment vs Tree Survey
A root investigation is typically requested once an AIA has identified a potential TPZ conflict and the actual root position needs confirming before design or construction proceeds.
Our Investigation Process
- 1Consultation: we discuss your project and what the investigation needs to confirm, and review your construction plans to identify where excavation may affect roots.
- 2AirSpade excavation: non-destructive excavation to expose relevant roots, with diameter, depth, direction and condition recorded for each significant root.
- 3Mapping: root locations are mapped, and integrated with survey data where required.
- 4Report: practical, construction-specific recommendations delivered electronically to inform design, engineering and construction.

An AirSpade uses compressed air to carefully remove soil from around roots, allowing significant roots to be exposed, measured and recorded while minimising the risk of mechanical root damage.
AirSpade excavation is a non-destructive investigation technique designed to expose roots while minimising disturbance and avoiding the cutting or tearing associated with mechanical excavation, which is why it's suitable for use within Tree Protection Zones.
Estimated root zones are based on general formulas and can be inaccurate for an individual tree. A physical investigation confirms exactly where significant roots are, giving your design and construction team certainty rather than an assumption.
Yes. Where required, we map root locations and integrate them with surveyed site data, providing CAD or GIS-compatible outputs your architect or engineer can use directly.
Yes. In many cases, verifying the actual location of roots shows that proposed works can proceed with adjustments, rather than requiring the tree to be removed based on an overly cautious estimate.

What Our Clients Say
Request a Tree Root Investigation
If excavation is planned near a tree you need to retain, don't rely on an estimate. Arrange a non-destructive Tree Root Investigation and get verified root data your design and construction team can build on.
