Tree canopy pruned for clearance from a house roof in Sydney

Need a Tree Pruned in Sydney?

Where council approval or arboricultural evidence is required, our AQF Level 5 Consulting Arborists prepare the appropriate documentation and pruning specifications. Once any necessary approval has been obtained, the approved pruning can be undertaken.

Not sure whether your proposed pruning requires council approval? Send us photographs of the tree and the branches you'd like pruned and we'll help identify the appropriate next step.

Do I Need Council Approval to Prune a Tree?

Whether pruning requires council approval depends on the council area, whether the tree is protected, and the extent of the work proposed. Minor, routine pruning is often permitted without approval, but significant pruning, such as larger branch removal, substantial canopy reduction or root pruning, can require the same approval pathway as removal in many council areas. We assess this against your specific council's rules before any work begins.

Sydney Tree Removal and Pruning Guidelines

Professional Tree Pruning Services

Professional pruning isn't simply cutting a tree back. The method and extent should respond to the tree, the reason for pruning, and the amount of live canopy that can appropriately be removed.

  • Deadwood and storm-damaged branch removal
  • Building and structure clearance, including for approved development or construction access
  • Canopy management to control growth and structure while retaining the tree
  • Structural pruning to address identified defects or developing branch architecture

Our Tree Pruning Process

We can assist with coordinating the next stage so the work is completed in accordance with the Arborist Report, pruning specifications and council conditions.

  1. 1Assess: we inspect the tree, the proposed pruning and surrounding site conditions, and determine whether council approval or arboricultural documentation may be required.
  2. 2Report: where required, an AQF Level 5 Tree Pruning Report documents the tree, proposed pruning and arboricultural reasoning.
  3. 3Approval: where council approval is required, the report can support the applicable application or approval pathway.
  4. 4Prune: once any necessary approval has been obtained, the approved pruning can be undertaken.

When Is an AQF Level 5 Tree Pruning Report Needed?

A Tree Pruning Report may be appropriate where proposed pruning exceeds your council's minor-pruning provisions, larger branches or a substantial part of the canopy need to be removed, root pruning is proposed, or tree structure and safety are relevant to the proposed work. Councils sometimes request arboricultural information directly, and pruning tied to a Development Application generally needs its own documentation too.

Where a formal consulting arborist report is required, most Sydney councils expect it to be prepared by a consulting arborist with qualifications equivalent to AQF Level 5. Our council location guides set out the specific requirements for individual areas.

What Does a Tree Pruning Report Include?

Where applicable, proposed pruning is documented with reference to the pruning classes identified in AS 4373, together with branch locations, sizes and the estimated percentage of crown to be removed.

  • Tree identification, species and dimensions
  • Health and structural condition
  • Proposed pruning objectives and applicable pruning class
  • Branches proposed for removal, including size and location
  • Photographic evidence and estimated canopy percentage affected
  • Arboricultural reasoning and recommendations for compliant pruning

What Pruning Can Be Done Without Council Approval?

Most Sydney councils allow a limited amount of minor pruning without formal approval, commonly deadwood removal, small-scale canopy reduction, and clearance pruning near powerlines or structures, subject to conditions on branch size, distance and canopy percentage. These thresholds vary meaningfully between council areas, so rather than apply a general rule that may not hold for your council, we check the current provisions for your specific area before advising whether proposed work is likely to be exempt.

See our council location guides for exemption details specific to your area, or read our Sydney Tree Removal and Pruning Guidelines for how pruning rules generally work across Sydney.

Which Tree Service Do You Need?

Where pruning cannot reasonably address significant structural defects, advanced decline or unacceptable risk, a Tree Removal Report or Tree Risk Assessment may be more appropriate than pruning alone.

Tree Pruning for Development Applications

Where development requires canopy pruning, the DA Tree Impact Assessment identifies the pruning class, affected branches and estimated crown removal needed to support the application.
