Need a Tree Protection Plan for Your Development?
Where a DA Tree Impact Assessment identifies which trees can be retained and what impacts need to be managed, a Tree Protection Plan translates the AIA's tree-retention recommendations into practical protection measures that can be implemented during construction.
Arbor Express prepares Tree Protection Plans for developments throughout Sydney, carried out by AQF Level 5 Consulting Arborists.

When Do You Need a Tree Protection Plan?
Tree Protection Plans are commonly required where retained trees need protection during development, either as part of Development Application documentation or through conditions of Development Consent. This commonly applies to new dwellings, duplexes, townhouses, residential flat buildings, commercial and industrial developments, childcare centres, schools and infrastructure projects.
Plans are prepared with reference to AS 4970 and the requirements applying to the individual development.
What Does a Tree Protection Plan Include?
Each plan is written as a practical on-site reference, covering the items listed.
- Tree Protection Zones (TPZ) and Structural Root Zones (SRZ)
- Tree protection fencing locations
- Protection signage requirements
- Approved access routes and storage restrictions
- Excavation and services methodology near retained trees
- Arborist inspection and hold-point requirements
- Construction notes for builders and contractors
Tree Protection Measures During Construction
Depending on the site, measures specified may include tree protection fencing and signage, ground protection over root zones, restricted machinery access and material storage, excavation or service trenching methodology near root zones, root pruning methods where required, and ongoing Project Arborist supervision.
Without a clear Tree Protection Plan, tree protection measures can be left to interpretation on site, increasing the risk of tree damage, non-compliant works and construction delays.
