Need a Flora and Fauna Assessment for Your Development?

Arbor Express prepares Flora and Fauna Assessments throughout Sydney for Development Applications, subdivisions, infrastructure projects and vegetation clearing.

Assessments are prepared by our qualified ecologist and, where required, coordinated with our AQF Level 5 Consulting Arborists.

When Do You Need a Flora and Fauna Assessment?

An ecological assessment may be required where a proposed development could affect native vegetation, fauna habitat, threatened species or ecological communities.

The required scope depends on the site and the planning controls that apply. We can review your project and advise what level of assessment is appropriate.

  • Development Applications
  • Residential and rural subdivisions
  • Vegetation clearing
  • Commercial and industrial development
  • Infrastructure and utility projects
  • Works adjoining bushland, waterways or habitat corridors

What Does a Flora and Fauna Assessment Include?

Each assessment is scoped to the site and proposed works, and commonly covers the items listed.

  • Native vegetation and vegetation condition
  • Flora species present on the site
  • Fauna habitat and habitat features
  • Hollow-bearing trees
  • Threatened flora and fauna
  • Threatened ecological communities
  • Habitat connectivity and ecological corridors
  • Riparian areas and wetlands where relevant
  • Ecological constraints affecting the proposed development
  • Recommendations for avoidance, mitigation or further assessment

Threatened Species and Ecological Communities

Where a site contains, or may provide habitat for, threatened species or ecological communities, our ecologist assesses the potential ecological constraints relevant to the proposed works.

Depending on the findings and applicable planning requirements, further survey, specialist assessment or another approval pathway may be required. Identifying these constraints early allows the project team to respond during planning and design rather than discovering them late in the approval process.

Habitat and Biodiversity Assessment

Ecological assessment considers more than individual plants or animals.

Habitat features such as hollow-bearing trees, waterways, understorey vegetation and connections to surrounding bushland can influence the ecological importance of a site and how a development should respond to it.

These considerations are particularly important for sites adjoining bushland, riparian corridors or other areas of established habitat.

Integrated Arboricultural and Ecological Assessment

Many development sites contain overlapping tree and ecological constraints. Where required, our qualified ecologist works alongside our AQF Level 5 Consulting Arborists so tree assessment and ecological assessment can be coordinated within the same project team.

This can be particularly useful where retained trees also provide fauna habitat, where hollow-bearing trees are present, or where vegetation constraints affect both the arboricultural and ecological response to a proposed development.

Where your project also needs a DA Tree Impact Assessment for the same Development Application, the two can be prepared and coordinated together. See also Tree Reports Sydney.

Our Flora and Fauna Assessment Process

  1. 1Project review: we review your proposal, site information and likely ecological assessment requirements.
  2. 2Site assessment: our ecologist inspects the vegetation, habitat and relevant ecological features.
  3. 3Ecological assessment: flora, fauna, habitat and relevant biodiversity constraints are assessed.
  4. 4Recommendations: we identify appropriate avoidance, mitigation or further assessment requirements.
  5. 5Report: your Flora and Fauna Assessment, prepared for the relevant planning or approval process.
