Expert Arborist Reports Across Northern Wollongong
Ward 1 extends through Wollongong's northern coastal and escarpment communities.
The ward includes Helensburgh, Otford and the northern villages through Stanwell Park, Coalcliff, Scarborough, Wombarra, Coledale and Austinmer to Thirroul, Bulli, Woonona, Bellambi and Corrimal, and extends south to around Fairy Meadow and Balgownie, which are split with Ward 2. It is the northern ward, with substantial bushland and escarpment land. The narrow distance between the Tasman Sea and the Illawarra Escarpment is a defining development constraint.
Which Arborist Report Do You Need?
Coastal Villages, Escarpment Slopes & Native Vegetation
Thirroul, Austinmer, Coledale and the northern coastal villages contain established homes on increasingly valuable and often constrained sites. Pools, retaining structures, additions and replacement dwellings can interact closely with mature trees.
Bulli, Woonona and Corrimal contain larger established residential areas with continuing redevelopment and mature canopy. Helensburgh, Otford and Stanwell Park have a much stronger bushland and escarpment influence. These northern communities therefore require more than a generic Wollongong tree assessment: the relationship between slope, bushland, retained native trees and proposed construction can be central to the project.

Wollongong Council Tree Guidelines in Ward 1
Wollongong's private-tree rules apply across Ward 1. Non-exempt trees may require approval where they exceed Council's size or pruning thresholds, and tree removal associated with development should be addressed through the Development Application.
Council permission is generally required for non-exempt trees more than 5 metres high or with a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more measured at ground level.
Northern properties may also be affected by bushfire, biodiversity, escarpment or other site-specific planning controls.
Replacement planting: Council requires a replacement tree for every tree approved for removal through the private Tree Permit pathway. Woonona, Bellambi and Corrimal are among Council's identified low-canopy suburbs. Council still requires one replacement tree for each approved removal, but eligible residents in these suburbs may collect two replacement trees through Council's Greenplan Plant Sales. Check current thresholds and exemptions on the Wollongong Council tree requirements page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Northern sites can have broader vegetation, bushfire and environmental constraints in addition to individual-tree issues.
Yes. Excavation and changes in ground level for retaining walls, pools and driveways on Thirroul's sloping escarpment sites can affect important roots, sometimes well away from the trunk. Root investigation before construction can show where they actually are.
Yes. Roots and Tree Protection Zones can extend across property boundaries. On narrow coastal lots, a neighbour's tree can shape where a new dwelling, pool or driveway can go, so the Arboricultural Impact Assessment should show how it will be protected.
Yes. Council says development-related tree removal should be included within the Development Application. For standalone private-tree removal, pruning or Tree Permit questions unrelated to development, Wollongong Tree Permit Services can check the Council pathway first.
