Expert Arborist Reports Across A Ward
Covering suburbs across Sutherland A Ward, including Cronulla, parts of Woolooware, Greenhills Beach, Burraneer, Dolans Bay, parts of Lilli Pilli, Port Hacking, Kurnell and Bundeena.
A Ward covers Sutherland Shire's eastern and coastal areas, ranging from established residential redevelopment around Cronulla and Woolooware to waterfront properties around Burraneer, Dolans Bay, Lilli Pilli and Port Hacking. Kurnell, Bundeena and Maianbar introduce a stronger relationship with native vegetation and environmentally sensitive landscapes.
This makes A Ward one of Sutherland Shire's most varied arboricultural areas.
Which Arborist Report Do You Need?
Residential redevelopment around Cronulla and Woolooware, waterfront construction around Burraneer and Port Hacking, and assessments near native vegetation around Kurnell are among the common reasons property owners across A Ward require an Arborist Report.
Coastal Redevelopment, Waterfront Sites & Native Vegetation
Cronulla and Woolooware contain continuing residential redevelopment, where mature trees and neighbouring vegetation can become increasingly important as building footprints intensify.
Burraneer, Dolans Bay, Lilli Pilli and Port Hacking combine established residential properties with slopes, waterfront sites, pools, retaining structures and mature landscapes.
Further south, Kurnell, Bundeena and Maianbar sit within a much stronger natural environment, where native vegetation and broader environmental constraints can become important: these are materially different arboricultural settings even though they fall within the same Council ward.

Sutherland Shire Council Tree Guidelines in A Ward
When a permit is needed: Council's private-tree controls (DCP Chapter 39) apply throughout this ward. Vegetation with a trunk diameter of more than 100 mm, measured 500 mm above natural ground level, generally needs a Tree Permit for pruning or removal unless an exemption applies. Council's arborists inspect each application before deciding it.
Replacement planting: approved removals are replaced with two new indigenous trees on site, or four off site, for every tree removed.
Imminent risk: a tree posing an immediate risk to life or property can be removed without a permit only where Council is satisfied of the risk. An arborist with at least an AQF Level 4 qualification must inspect and photograph the tree, and the owner and arborist must complete and keep the SEPP Exempt Imminent Risk Form for at least two years.
Independent risk reports: where a permit application is supported by a TRAQ risk assessment, Council requires the arborist to be an independent consultant with no affiliation with a tree contracting company.
Development: where vegetation is removed to facilitate development, it is assessed as part of the Development Application. Check current thresholds and exemptions on the Sutherland Shire Council tree requirements page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Its Tree Protection Zone, roots or canopy may extend into the development site and may need to be considered as part of your Development Application.
Yes. Proposed removal can be assessed within the development arboricultural report, alongside retention alternatives where relevant.
Yes. Actual root location can be important on constrained waterfront and residential sites before a design is finalised.
No. Council has different approval and exemption pathways depending on the circumstances, and some private-tree applications rely on independent reporting requirements outside standard development reporting. We can advise which pathway applies to your situation.
Sutherland Shire's Chapter 39 tree controls apply throughout A Ward, with exemptions under DCP clauses 4.3 and 4.4 and separate RFS pathways. Coastal and waterfront properties here often bring bushland vegetation and vegetation near creeks or the foreshore into Council's controls as well, so the individual property and tree should be checked first. See the Sutherland hub for the full explanation. For standalone private-tree removal, pruning or Tree Permit questions unrelated to development, Sutherland Tree Permit Services can check the Council pathway first.
