Liverpool Council regulates tree removal, pruning and development affecting trees through its planning controls, requiring development consent or an authorisation permit before removing, pruning or damaging most protected trees across the LGA.
- Development Applications affecting existing trees commonly require an Arboricultural Impact Assessment to AS 4970.
- Approval is generally required for trees over 3.5 metres high, 4 metres canopy spread or 400 mm trunk diameter (measured 1 metre above ground), unless exemptions apply.
- Council keeps a list of exempt species, including Camphor Laurel, Privet, African Olive, Willow, Poplar and Rhus Tree.
- Additional considerations may apply in Western Sydney growth areas and land affected by major infrastructure, including the Western Sydney Airport precinct.
