Fairfield Council regulates tree removal, pruning and development affecting trees through the Fairfield Citywide Development Control Plan and the State Environmental Planning Policy (Biodiversity and Conservation) 2021.

- Most private tree removal and pruning requires a Tree Work Permit, unless a recognised exemption applies.
- Council keeps an exempt species list of "undesirable" trees that may be removed without a permit when identified in writing by a qualified arborist or horticulturalist.
- Clearing associated with development may also be subject to the NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme.
