Expert Arborist Reports Across Lane Cove West Ward
West Ward covers the western side of Lane Cove Municipality, including Lane Cove West and Riverview. It combines established residential development with mature native canopy, sloping land, and significant bushland and river interfaces.
Development close to established trees can require careful assessment of root zones, excavation impacts and construction protection.
Which Arborist Report Do You Need?
Bushland Interfaces, River Slopes & Native Canopy
The western side of Lane Cove has a strong relationship with native vegetation and bushland. Alterations, additions, pools, retaining walls, driveways and redevelopment can interact with trees growing on sloping sites or close to bushland boundaries.
Properties close to bushland often involve more than a single isolated tree. Assessment may need to consider multiple trees, native vegetation, construction access and the relationship between private development and adjoining bushland. On larger sites, a Tree Survey can establish the existing tree population before retention and removal decisions are made.

Lane Cove Council Tree Guidelines in West Ward
When a permit is needed: Council's consent is required to prune or remove any tree with a height exceeding 4 metres, a canopy spread greater than 5 metres, or a trunk diameter greater than 150 mm measured 1 metre above the ground, and for roots 40 mm or greater in diameter.
No 10% pruning allowance: unlike some councils, Lane Cove does not allow pruning of up to 10% of a tree without a permit.
Dead trees: dead trees can be removed under a Fee-Free Tree Works Permit, which still needs to be lodged. Council's Tree Preservation Officer decides on complete or partial removal, taking account of the tree's height and any wildlife habitat.
Development: a Complying Development Certificate does not automatically authorise removal of a protected tree. Where removal is part of a Development Application, it is assessed through the DA.
Replacement planting: for trees removed through the DA process, Council's landscaping controls require a minimum 1:1 replacement ratio, with replacement trees capable of reaching at least the mature height and spread of the tree removed. Standalone Tree Permit conditions apply separately. Check current thresholds and exemptions on the Lane Cove Council tree requirements page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Usually. Council's consent is needed for any tree over 4 metres high, with a canopy spread over 5 metres, or with a trunk diameter over 150 mm at 1 metre above ground, and Lane Cove does not allow the 10% pruning allowance some councils do. Where removal is part of a Development Application, it is assessed through the DA.
Many are. Council's controls apply to trees meeting its size criteria, and native trees and bushland vegetation are a particular priority in Lane Cove's Tree Preservation controls.
Yes. A Tree Survey or multi-tree Arboricultural Impact Assessment is appropriate where development or management involves several trees, which is common on bushland-edge properties in Riverview and Lane Cove West.
Not automatically. A Complying Development Certificate does not authorise removal of a tree protected by Lane Cove's controls, so the tree pathway needs to be confirmed before works start.
