Expert Arborist Reports Across Lane Cove East Ward
Covering Greenwich and the eastern parts of Lane Cove and St Leonards within Lane Cove Council.
East Ward covers the eastern side of Lane Cove Municipality, including Greenwich and the areas toward St Leonards. It combines established houses, apartments and redevelopment on harbour-side and sloping sites, with continuing development pressure on the St Leonards side of the LGA.
Those conditions create significant interaction between trees, excavation, retaining structures and neighbouring properties.
Which Arborist Report Do You Need?
Harbour Slopes, Basements & Neighbouring Trees
Greenwich and the eastern parts of Lane Cove contain sites constrained by slope, access and neighbouring development. Excavation for basements, additions and retaining structures can extend into tree root zones even where a tree stands outside the proposed building footprint.
On constrained East Ward sites, a neighbouring tree may have roots extending well into the development property. Root investigation can establish where significant roots actually are before basement, retaining-wall or service excavation proceeds, and a Tree Protection Plan then turns those findings into practical construction controls.

Lane Cove Council Tree Guidelines in East Ward
When a permit is needed: Council's consent is required to prune or remove any tree with a height exceeding 4 metres, a canopy spread greater than 5 metres, or a trunk diameter greater than 150 mm measured 1 metre above the ground, and for roots 40 mm or greater in diameter.
No 10% pruning allowance: unlike some councils, Lane Cove does not allow pruning of up to 10% of a tree without a permit.
Dead trees: dead trees can be removed under a Fee-Free Tree Works Permit, which still needs to be lodged. Council's Tree Preservation Officer decides on complete or partial removal, taking account of the tree's height and any wildlife habitat.
Development: a Complying Development Certificate does not automatically authorise removal of a protected tree. Where removal is part of a Development Application, it is assessed through the DA.
Replacement planting: for trees removed through the DA process, Council's landscaping controls require a minimum 1:1 replacement ratio, with replacement trees capable of reaching at least the mature height and spread of the tree removed. Standalone Tree Permit conditions apply separately. Check current thresholds and exemptions on the Lane Cove Council tree requirements page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Usually. Council's consent is needed for any tree over 4 metres high, with a canopy spread over 5 metres, or with a trunk diameter over 150 mm at 1 metre above ground, and Lane Cove does not allow the 10% pruning allowance some councils do. Where removal is part of a Development Application, it is assessed through the DA.
It depends on the trees and proposed works. Where development may affect retained or neighbouring trees, Council generally expects an Arboricultural Impact Assessment. Early assessment identifies Tree Protection Zone constraints before the design is fixed.
Yes. Roots and canopy can extend across property boundaries. On sloping harbour-side lots, a neighbour's tree can shape basement lines, retaining walls and driveways, so the Arboricultural Impact Assessment should show how it will be protected.
Not automatically. A Complying Development Certificate does not authorise removal of a tree protected by Lane Cove's controls, so the tree pathway needs to be confirmed before works start.
