Expert Arborist Reports Across Lane Cove Central Ward
Central Ward covers the heart of Lane Cove Municipality, around the Lane Cove village centre. It is characterised by established residential neighbourhoods, mature private canopy and ongoing alterations, additions and infill development.
On constrained residential sites, trees can influence building footprints, excavation, pools, retaining walls, driveways and neighbouring-property interfaces.
Which Arborist Report Do You Need?
Established Homes, Infill & Mature Private Canopy
Central Lane Cove contains established houses, renovated properties, townhouses and other infill development, and many mature trees pre-date the proposed extension or redevelopment.
The arboricultural question is therefore often not simply whether a tree can be removed, but whether design and construction can proceed while retaining viable trees. Early assessment identifies Tree Protection Zone and Structural Root Zone constraints before architectural plans are finalised.

Lane Cove Council Tree Guidelines in Central Ward
When a permit is needed: Council's consent is required to prune or remove any tree with a height exceeding 4 metres, a canopy spread greater than 5 metres, or a trunk diameter greater than 150 mm measured 1 metre above the ground, and for roots 40 mm or greater in diameter.
No 10% pruning allowance: unlike some councils, Lane Cove does not allow pruning of up to 10% of a tree without a permit.
Dead trees: dead trees can be removed under a Fee-Free Tree Works Permit, which still needs to be lodged. Council's Tree Preservation Officer decides on complete or partial removal, taking account of the tree's height and any wildlife habitat.
Development: a Complying Development Certificate does not automatically authorise removal of a protected tree. Where removal is part of a Development Application, it is assessed through the DA.
Replacement planting: for trees removed through the DA process, Council's landscaping controls require a minimum 1:1 replacement ratio, with replacement trees capable of reaching at least the mature height and spread of the tree removed. Standalone Tree Permit conditions apply separately. Check current thresholds and exemptions on the Lane Cove Council tree requirements page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Usually. Council's consent is needed for any tree over 4 metres high, with a canopy spread over 5 metres, or with a trunk diameter over 150 mm at 1 metre above ground, and Lane Cove does not allow the 10% pruning allowance some councils do. Where removal is part of a Development Application, it is assessed through the DA.
Often, yes. An Arboricultural Impact Assessment can show how much of the Tree Protection Zone the design encroaches into and whether footings, bridging or a revised layout would allow the tree to be retained.
Yes. Non-destructive root investigation shows where significant roots actually are, rather than relying on calculated Tree Protection Zones alone. That evidence can support design changes that allow a valuable tree to be retained.
Not automatically. A Complying Development Certificate does not authorise removal of a tree protected by Lane Cove's controls, so the tree pathway needs to be confirmed before works start.
