Expert Arborist Reports Across Granville Ward
Granville Ward is one of Cumberland City's densest and most urbanised wards. Merrylands is a major strategic centre with substantial retail, residential and commercial development, while Granville sits immediately beside Parramatta and continues to change through redevelopment associated with the Parramatta Road corridor and surrounding centres.
Holroyd, Guildford and Merrylands West add established residential neighbourhoods to the ward. These conditions make constrained sites, neighbouring trees and construction-stage tree protection particularly important.
Which Arborist Report Do You Need?
Dense Development, Town Centres & Constrained Sites
Merrylands and Granville contain some of Cumberland's strongest development pressure. Higher-density housing, commercial development and replacement development can occupy a substantial proportion of the available site.
In these situations, trees on adjoining properties can become as important as trees within the development property itself. Roots, canopy and Tree Protection Zones can extend across property boundaries and affect proposed basements, driveways, foundations and services.
Holroyd and Merrylands West provide a more established residential setting, but redevelopment still brings new structures increasingly close to mature private and street trees.

Cumberland City Council Tree Guidelines in Granville Ward
Cumberland DCP 2021 now provides the current development-control framework across Cumberland City. Part G contains the city-wide tree-management provisions and applies to development applications throughout the LGA.
Protected trees and development: Part G states that the vegetation provisions apply to woody perennial plants 4 metres or greater in height. Tree retention, removal and protection should therefore be considered early where a proposed building, driveway, basement, retaining wall, services or excavation may affect established trees.
Tree removal reasons: Council's DCP specifically says nuisance from flowers, leaves or fruit, wanting more light or views, shade, a tree being too large, or unsubstantiated fear of failure are not substantive reasons for removal. Where removal is proposed, the arboricultural evidence should address the actual condition, risk, development impact and retention options relevant to the tree.
Replacement planting: where existing trees are approved for removal as part of a development, Cumberland DCP 2021 provides a replacement offset of 1:1 for trees 4–9 metres high and 2:1 for trees greater than 10 metres high. Replacement planting is preferably undertaken on the development property, with alternative locations considered by Council on merit. Check current thresholds and exemptions on the Cumberland Council tree requirements page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Trees and other woody perennial vegetation 4 metres or greater in height fall within Cumberland DCP 2021's vegetation controls, subject to the applicable approval pathway and exemptions. For tree work outside a Development Application, Council's tree management page states that many woody trees over 3.6 metres high need written approval. Before removal, the property, tree and proposed work should be checked against Council's current approval pathway and any applicable exemptions.
An arborist report can be required where proposed buildings, basements, driveways, excavation, retaining walls, stormwater or services may affect trees on the site, neighbouring land or the street. On constrained redevelopment sites, identifying Tree Protection Zones early can prevent avoidable redesign later.
Yes. A neighbouring tree's roots and Tree Protection Zone can extend into the development site. The Arboricultural Impact Assessment can identify the likely interaction and set out protection measures or design responses for Council.
Encroachment does not automatically mean the tree has to be removed. The arborist can assess the proposed impact and, where necessary, use non-destructive root investigation to establish where significant roots actually occur before the design or excavation method is finalised.
Yes. Where removal is connected with the proposed development, the AIA can assess the tree's condition, retention value, development impacts and available retention options, and provide Council with the arboricultural basis for the recommendation.
