Expert Arborist Reports Across Chatswood & West Ward
West Ward covers the north-west of Willoughby City, including Chatswood West, the Willoughby City part of Lane Cove North, and parts of Chatswood and Roseville. Chatswood is Willoughby City's major commercial and residential centre, and the centre itself is shared with Middle Harbour and Sailors Bay wards.
Chatswood has extensive high-rise residential and commercial development, while surrounding western areas include established residential neighbourhoods and properties approaching Lane Cove North and Roseville. The resulting arboricultural environment ranges from basement-heavy major development sites to established suburban properties containing mature trees.
Which Arborist Report Do You Need?
Chatswood Density, Basement Excavation & Constrained Sites
Chatswood is one of Sydney's major metropolitan centres. Higher-density development can occupy most of a site, making trees on adjoining land, street trees and retained landscape areas especially important.
Basement excavation, crane and construction access, underground services and deep excavation can all interact with tree root systems. Current housing reforms also increase development opportunities around Chatswood and parts of Roseville within the Willoughby LGA. Early arboricultural assessment can therefore be critical before final development layouts are established.

Northern & Boundary Areas
Established residential properties affected by ward and LGA boundaries. Willoughby City Council Tree Guidelines in West Ward
Willoughby's current vegetation controls apply across West Ward. Trees meeting the height, girth, crown-spread or locally-native criteria, or within a defined wildlife corridor or habitat area, require approval unless an applicable exemption exists.
In Chatswood, development applications can involve retained private trees, neighbouring trees and trees on public land. Tree Protection Plans may be required where construction works could affect retained vegetation.
Council arborist-report requirement: Where Willoughby Council requires an arboriculture report for an application to clear vegetation, Council states that the report must be prepared by an AQF Level 5 Consultant Arborist and that the company preparing it must not be financially affiliated with, or have a business relationship with, a tree removal/pruning company. Arbor Express is a consulting-only practice with no tree removal or pruning business, so our reports meet this requirement.
Replacement planting: approved removals currently require replacement at 3:1.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Root systems and Tree Protection Zones can extend across boundaries. On constrained Chatswood sites, a neighbour's tree can limit basement lines and building footprints, so the Arboricultural Impact Assessment should show how it will be protected.
Very often. Council requires a permit for trees over 4 metres high, over 600 mm trunk girth or over 3 metres crown spread, for locally native trees and vegetation in wildlife corridors, or for a tree that is visually prominent from the street or surrounding properties, unless an exemption applies or the removal is assessed through a Development Application. For standalone private-tree removal or pruning questions unrelated to development, Willoughby City Council's Trees on your property page sets out the current application process.
Yes. Deep basement excavation can materially affect roots of trees on the site and on adjoining land, especially on constrained Chatswood development sites. Early assessment lets the excavation line or construction method respond.
Yes. Non-destructive root investigation provides physical evidence of where significant roots actually are, which can resolve an uncertain tree-development conflict before the design is finalised.
The reforms increase development opportunities in specified areas around Chatswood, but they do not automatically remove Willoughby's vegetation-management controls. Trees still need to be assessed through the DA.
