Expert Arborist Reports Across Matraville, Malabar & South Ward
South Ward contains Randwick City's strongest mix of southern coastal development, native vegetation and larger open-space systems. It includes Matraville, Malabar, Chifley, Little Bay, Phillip Bay, La Perouse and southern parts of Maroubra.
These areas are materially different from the denser northern wards. Development can involve larger sites, remnant vegetation, coastal exposure, golf-course and open-space interfaces and substantial native trees.
Which Arborist Report Do You Need?
Native Vegetation, Coastal Development & Larger Sites
Matraville and Chifley contain established residential areas alongside major institutional, industrial and open-space land. Malabar has a strong coastal and bushland influence.
Little Bay combines significant newer development with remnant vegetation and major open spaces. Phillip Bay and La Perouse sit within one of Randwick City's most environmentally distinctive landscapes. Tree assessment can therefore involve broader biodiversity and vegetation issues as well as conventional residential tree-development conflicts.

Randwick City Council Tree Guidelines in South Ward
Council's tree-preservation controls under Part B5 of the DCP apply throughout South Ward, together with any additional environmental or biodiversity provisions relevant to the site. Hollow-bearing trees and trees in recognised habitat require a tree permit regardless of ordinary size thresholds.
Development near biodiversity areas may require broader consideration of vegetation impacts under the State Environmental Planning Policy (Biodiversity Conservation) 2021.
Replacement planting: under Randwick's current development controls, where a tree proposed for removal through a Development Application is 3 metres or more in height or has a canopy spread of 3 metres or more, replacement planting must be provided on the site. Replacement trees must provide the same or greater canopy size at maturity, be shown on the Landscape Plan and Arborist Report, be selected from Council's Desirable Species List and be planted from a minimum 45L pot size. Where Council considers there is insufficient room for equivalent on-site replacement, an applicant may seek offset planting on public land; Council's DCP states that generally at least three off-site trees are required for each tree removed.
The current rule. A tree permit is required for any tree 5 metres or more high, with a canopy 4 metres or more wide, or a trunk circumference of 400 mm or more at 1 metre above ground level (combined for multi-trunk species). A permit is also required for any hollow-bearing tree and for severing roots over 50 mm, regardless of size, and for any palm (other than Cocos palms), cycad or tree fern of any size, and any tree on public land. A Development Application, not a tree permit, is needed to prune more than 10% of the canopy in any 12 months or to remove a tree in a Heritage Conservation Area, on a heritage item, on Council's Register of Significant Trees, or connected to Aboriginal heritage significance.
